Divergent - Mind

Spoiler Alert: I will be analyzing Veronica Roth’s Divergent in this post, and I may include spoiler information. If you have not read the book, please read it first – it’s worth the time.

Tris, the protagonist in Divergent, grew up in Abnegation, chose Dauntless as her new faction, but she also tested high in Erudite, one of the two 'mind' factions in her society.

The Mind Society (I): The Erudite Faction

Erudite emphasizes logic and knowledge. Their founders believed ignorance caused their former society's downfall. They are the teachers and researchers in the grand society. They develop all the testing used to help people decide which factions to join. Unfortunately, their reliance on logic leads to a predictable conclusion.

(SPOILER) As in movies like 'I, Robot,' the only 'logical' means to save mankind is to subjugate them under the oppressive rule of the mind society. They develop a new method of mind control to use Dauntless as soldiers and take over the government from Abnegation.

The Mind Society (II): The Candor Faction

While Erudite emphasizes knowledge, Candor emphasizes truth. Their founders believed duplicity caused their former society's downfall. They are the judges and leaders in law in the new society. Not only do they strive to tell the truth in all things, they learn how to detect duplicity in others.

While truth may seem like a noble goal, it does have its drawbacks. Those who always tell the truth lack tact, as Tris discovers when she meets two former members of Candor in her Dauntless initiation class. Those in Candor lacks social skills regarded as 'acceptable white lies' in other factions. While someone in Amity might say, 'my that new dress looks nice,' a person in Candor would say, 'That color clashes with your skin tone and the cut makes your hips look big.'

The Mind Character: Caleb

Caleb is Tris's brother and surprises everyone when he chooses Erudite in his choosing ceremony. He is truly selfless, but has a secret passion - books. He is the one who discovers the details of the Erudite plot and tries to warn his family and the others in Abnegation. When he goes with Tris to infiltrate the Dauntless facilities, he is focused on the plan rather than the dangers.
