House, M.D. (The First Team)

(Note: This post was originally written in 2012)

"House, M.D." was cancelled this year after eight seasons. The series is a great study in mind, body and spirit characters. First, there are three characters that remained throughout (almost) the entire series: House (Hugh Laurie), Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), and Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard). They are the first layer, but that will wait for another day. This post will focus on the first team under House's leadership - Chase, Cameron, and Foreman. The first clue to their character identity is the areas in which the specialize or focus upon.

The Mind Character: Foreman (Omar Epps)

Foreman's specialty is neurology. Foreman is the least passionate of the group, which is typical of the mind character. Of the three, he is also the most like House in his relationships, especially early in the series. In one episode, Foreman explains to the parents of a young boy the treatment he will need to cure him may also kill him. When they don't understand, he finally tells them they'll never understand. He tells them all they need to know is that the treatment is dangerous, it could kill him, and they should do it.

Foreman is often the one explaining why things aren't working, especially early on, and he is the most likely to challenge House on an intellectual level.

The Body Character: Chase (Jesse Spencer)

Chase specializes in infectious diseases, diseases that attack body tissues directly. He's also the one most interested in sex. In one episode, Chase ends up with three women one night, and later has to deal with the consequences. He also gives in to pressure to spy on House when a new administrator wants House fired. The rest of the team refused for different reasons, but Chase gave in because he believed it was the only way to save his job.

Chase is often the one being ridiculed for his ideas and is most likely to cause surprise when he actually gets something right. In one episode, he admitted to guessing at an answer when House asked the team a question.

The Spirit Character: Cameron (Jennifer Morrison)

Cameron usually addresses issues with immunology or endocrinology. Endocrinology is what controls our moods. She is the character most concerned with the patient's feelings, and not just as a symptom of some disease. She married a young man she knew was dying from cancer because she loved him and wanted him to be happy his last days. She falls in love with House because she feels sorry for him.

Cameron is most likely to bring up the patient's or the family's emotional needs. She is also the most likely to get her feelings hurt if things don't work her way. Chase has no feelings to get hurt and Foreman doesn't let feelings get in the way of the job - just like House.
